Fighting Obesity With Fitness

Obesity has taken over the health of people within the United States. If the issue is prevented and treated, it can possibly change the overall fitness of America.

Eating unhealthy foods and living an inactive lifestyle have become commonplace in modern-day American society. Many are just not getting enough exercise and nutrition.

Many organizations, like schools and the government, have attempted to instill programs to activate both children and adults. In fact, many corporations have created health and insurance plans with benefits for those who exercise and stay fit.

Even with all of these measures being taken, obesity is still a problem. The actual definition for the term is when an individual weighs more than what is healthy for their height average.

There are many different levels of obesity and being overweight than can cause an individual to be more prone to certain illnesses. Adults' height and weight ration is calculated through body mass index, or BMI.

Many find that this number also coincides with their body fat percentage. The number scale records that an individual that has a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight, and someone with a body mass index of 30 or over is considered obese.

BMI cannot predict the exact percentage of body fat; it is only an approximate indicator. In fact, it can be somewhat flawed and not measure individuals accurately; even athletes, sometimes, are considered overweight because the weight of their muscle is more than is usually recorded for an adult of their height.

The percentage can be different from male to female and between those at different fitness levels. Waist circumference can be an indicator of the likelihood of developing heart disease or diabetes.

Caloric intake is a measure that one can rely on to predict weight gain and loss. The daily amount of calories that you take in can have an effect on you body fat and likelihood of obesity.

Calories are units of energy present in the food we eat. Generally, lower calorie foods are those like fruits, vegetables, and lean meats and those that have a higher count are loaded with fats and sugars, like red meats, desserts, and soda.

Appropriate daily caloric intake is different for every individual, even though there is a general amount for each level and gender. Consuming more than this amount can possibly make you gain weight.

The amount of calories that you eat can be balanced with the amount of exercise that you are able to get each day. When the intake of calories and the number burned during activity balance or cancel each other out, an individual may lose or gain weight.

However, there must be enough leftover to equal the number that is necessary for survival. Otherwise, you may risk becoming dangerously underweight.

If you tend to take in more calories or do not wish to lower your daily count, you must balance it with cardiovascular workouts, whether you bike outdoors or spend time on a treadmill at the gym. Exercise is the best way to get rid of extra fat within the body's system.

Environment and lifestyle can play a huge part in the level of an individual's fitness. However, genes and heredity can attribute to the likelihood of developing obesity.

There are some people that are just genetically programmed to have a harder time controlling their body mass than others. However, those that understand this problem and stay active and eat well can control it.

Just because someone is more prone to obesity genetically, it does not mean that they have to let it take over their health and life. Behavior can change an aspect like genetics.

National health issues, like obesity, could drastically change if people took initiative for their own health and wellness and decided to do something to combat or prevent it. Though not everyone may be able to become "thin" from this process, it can definitely have an effect on obesity, diabetes, and heart disease statistics.

Most doctors will warn overweight patients or those that are prone to weight problems to reduce their sodium, saturated fat, and sugar intake. This includes focusing on a nutritious regimen of fruits and veggies, whole grains, and lean meats.

However individuals decide to become more fit, it is almost certain that once obesity is reduced, America will also see a reduction in the diseases that can potentially be caused by it, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The more we take care of our bodies by eating well and exercising, the more fit we can become.
